Where the Medical Research ISX-3 fits in
Wherever electrical safety, isolation and mobility matter — bioimpedance, bioreactor monitoring, ingestible-device development and patient-adjacent EIS studies — the Medical Research ISX-3 brings lab-grade impedance spectroscopy into clinical research.
Bioimpedance & in-vivo studies
Forearm, body composition and tissue impedance measurements where galvanic isolation of the patient circuit is required. Used in published forearm impedance studies with 32-channel MUX setups.
Bioreactor & cell-culture monitoring
Non-invasive monitoring of bioreactors and cell cultures with the precision of the ISX-3 platform and isolation suitable for clinical-research labs.
Ingestible & implantable device research
Reference instrument for development of advanced biomedical devices such as ingestible electronics — for example the MiGUT capsule combining ingestible electronics with bioimpedance sensing.
Mobile clinical research
Battery operation, isolated USB / Ethernet and isolated I/O make it suitable for mobile setups, bedside studies and patient-adjacent measurements outside the standard lab.

Individual FAQ
Short technical answers to the questions we hear most often about the ISX-3.
Is the Medical Research ISX-3 a certified medical device?
No. The ISX-3 is not a medical product and is not intended for diagnosis or treatment of patients. The Medical Research ISX-3 includes additional safety measures specified in accordance with DIN EN 60601-1:2013-12, easing applications for exemptions for experiments on patients.
How is patient safety implemented?
Through a shielded enclosure, a medical-grade isolated 12 V DC AC/DC power supply with software-controlled switch-off, isolated full-speed USB, an Ethernet interface with included medical-grade network isolator, an external AC-coupling frontend for galvanic isolation of the patient circuit and the optional IsoIO module with hardware sync.
What's the difference vs the standard ISX-3?
Same measurement core and IF frontend, plus a 4-port BNC interface, two 4-point channels (AC-coupled + multiplexed DC-coupled), optional 16/32/64-channel AC-coupled MUX, optional battery operation up to 3 h and the medical-grade isolation features listed above.
Can it run mains-free?
Yes. With the integrated battery pack the system runs up to 3 hours mains-free, which is useful for bedside studies and mobile clinical research.
What frequency range does it cover?
100 mHz to 10 MHz standard, extendable to 40 MHz or 100 MHz, with a 300 dB dynamic range and 0.01 % base precision — identical to the ISX-3 core.
How is it controlled and automated?
Through the included Sciospec software suite and the COM interface for Java, C, Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB and similar environments. The IsoIO module also supports programmable I/O (UART, SPI, I²C) and hardware synchronization.
