SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

The ISX-3 measurement core — re-engineered around patient safety

The Medical Research ISX-3 keeps the full ISX-3 IF frontend and 4-port BNC interface, and surrounds it with a shielded enclosure, isolated supplies and isolated interfaces so you can take lab-grade EIS into clinical research environments without losing performance.

Medical-grade isolation

PATIENT-SAFE FRONTEND

Designed end-to-end for electrical safety in clinical research

Medical-grade isolated AC/DC power supply (12 V DC) with software-controlled switch-off, isolated full-speed USB, an Ethernet interface with included medical-grade network isolator and external AC-coupling frontend for full galvanic isolation of the patient circuit.

Dual 4-point channels

AC + DC COUPLED

Two 4-point channels with optional AC-coupled multiplexer

First channel AC-coupled for patient safety, second channel DC-coupled and multiplexable. Optional 16, 32 or 64 AC-coupled MUX channels expand the system for multi-electrode patient measurements such as bioimpedance, EIT-adjacent setups and forearm impedance studies.

IsoIO + battery + software

INTEGRATION & MOBILITY

Mobile, isolated I/O for real clinical setups

Optional battery pack delivers up to 3 hours of mains-free measurement. The IsoIO module provides 12 isolated digital outputs, 12 isolated digital inputs with pull-ups, 4 isolated bidirectional I²C ports and an isolated digital supply rail. Controlled via the Sciospec software suite and COM API (Java, C, Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB).

APPLICATIONS

Where the Medical Research ISX-3 fits in

Wherever electrical safety, isolation and mobility matter — bioimpedance, bioreactor monitoring, ingestible-device development and patient-adjacent EIS studies — the Medical Research ISX-3 brings lab-grade impedance spectroscopy into clinical research.

Bioimpedance & in-vivo studies

Forearm, body composition and tissue impedance measurements where galvanic isolation of the patient circuit is required. Used in published forearm impedance studies with 32-channel MUX setups.

Bioreactor & cell-culture monitoring

Non-invasive monitoring of bioreactors and cell cultures with the precision of the ISX-3 platform and isolation suitable for clinical-research labs.

Ingestible & implantable device research

Reference instrument for development of advanced biomedical devices such as ingestible electronics — for example the MiGUT capsule combining ingestible electronics with bioimpedance sensing.

Mobile clinical research

Battery operation, isolated USB / Ethernet and isolated I/O make it suitable for mobile setups, bedside studies and patient-adjacent measurements outside the standard lab.

PROOF IN PRACTICE

Patient-safe EIS in real clinical-research workflows

Researchers use the ISX-3 across plant biology, biosensing and clinical research. One published example tracks conductivity changes in plant tissue exposed to pulsed electric fields (PEFs) — using the ISX-3 as the primary EIS instrument.

Challenge

Capture multi-electrode bioimpedance changes on a human forearm during hand movements — with full galvanic isolation of the patient circuit.

SCIOSPEC ROLE

The Medical Research ISX-3 with a 32-channel AC-coupled multiplexer provides the isolated EIS frontend, control software and isolated I/O used throughout the setup.

RESULT

A simple, reproducible setup for multi-electrode forearm impedance — documented in the Sciospec application brief.
